Drug smuggler jailed

A drugs smuggler who tried to bring 26 kilos of cannabis in to the UK via Birmingham Airport has been jailed for 32 months, the Birmingham Mail reports.
Daniel Francis Hughes, a dual British / South African citizen, was arrested by officers from the UK Border Agency when they found the drugs hidden in his luggage. The 49-year-old from Cape Town pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle the drugs worth £70,000 into the UK at Warwick Crown Court last Thursday.
John Theobald, senior investigating officer for HM Revenue & Customs at the airport, said: ‘We will protect society from drug smuggling. We hope this sends out a clear message that our approach is one of zero tolerance.’
