Airlines receive 'good neighbour' awards

03.05.08

A number of airlines operating from Birmingham Airport have received awards for being ‘good neighbours’. The awards recognises those airlines who have made efforts to ensure they did not fly below 3000ft over densely-populated residential areas.

The awards were handed out at a ceremony this week and are part of Operation Pathfinder, which was established to encourage airlines to fly within strict 3 kilometre-wide corridors, so that less people below are affected by aircraft noise and pollution.

Local MP Caroline Spelman suggested the awards ceremony 2 years ago during a meeting with the airport on behalf of her constituents. At this year's ceremony she said: ‘The second anniversary of Operation Pathfinder shows the commitment by the airport and the airlines to ensure that aircraft keep to their tracks.'

‘Airlines are aware of the issues that over-flying and low flying cause residents. They are working with the airport to ensure that these movements do not have a negative effect on those living near the hub.’

The following airlines were the award winners for 2007:

* flybe - for the most improved track keeping performance
* Monarch - special award for working with the airport to improve track-keeping
* bmibaby - in the category of more than 200 flights a month
* Aer Lingus - in the category of more than 100 flights a month
* Ryanair - in the category of more than 50 flights a month
* Air India - in the category of less than 50 flights a month

Airlines given certificates for achieving a 95% target of 'on-track' departures in 2007 were: flybe, bmibaby, Lufthansa, Eastern Airways, Monarch, KLM, Thomsonfly, Brussels Airways, Aer Lingus, Thomas Cook Airlines, Ryanair, First Choice Airways, Emirates, SAS, Air Malta, Air India, City Airline, Continental Airlines.
