Facial recognition passport gates launched
04.03.10
Facial recognition scanners have been launched at Birmingham Airport as another option to queuing for traditional border control passport checks. Any British adults and those from throughout the EU are eligible to use the scanners provided they hold a biometric passport containing a electronic chip.
Alex Lawther, from the UK Border Agency, said the passenger response to the innovative machinery had been 'very favourable'. He said the machines are capable of discerning between identical twins.
Passengers simply swipe their passport into a machine then wait for their face to be scanned. If the images match, the will gates unlock and permit the passenger out of passport control. Mr Lawther said There isn't any need to be anxious about the storage of data. It [the scanner] only has access to data already stored inside your passport.'
