Airport to get £10m security upgrade
05.01.10
A £10m overhaul of security at Birmingham Airport is set to take place over the next 18 months, the Express & Star reports. The project will see existing checkpoints at Terminal One and Terminal Two removed and replaced a new, single, centralised security area on the first floor between the existing terminals.
The project is part of an overhaul of the airport, which Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham Airport told the newspaper is long overdue. He said: ‘Going through security is pretty grim at either terminal. We want to have a new centralised area. Whether there will be new full body scanners introduced [something the Prime Minister announced yesterday] is something that will come from Government.’
‘Improving passenger experience will be our main focus for 2010. We have a new Emirates business lounge opening in February and will be introducing new shops and an onward travel centre. We have a 10-year target to double passenger number from 9 to 18 million a year. Over the next 10 years £200m will be invested in the airport.'
