Minister says Birmingham Airport could help with South East capacity problems
05.03.11
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has urged Birmingham Airport to press ahead with its runway extension, the Birmingham Mail reports. He said the extension could help solve capacity problems at airports in the South East. He also said Birmingham could become one of the world’s best connect airports thanks to the 250 mph high speed rail link that would bring it within 37 minutes of London.
Mr Hammond said: ‘It looks as if Birmingham Airport regards itself as a solution to capacity problems. The runway extension will put them in a good position and high speed rail will be another part of that. Once we build a spur on the line to take in Heathrow [not for at least 15 years], you will be able to travel in 37 minutes from airport to airport, which is as long as it currently takes to get from terminal 4 to terminal 5 at Heathrow.’
