Terminal's 25th anniversary
07.06.09
Birmingham Airport is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of its terminal building. The £29m terminal was opened by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1984. Completed 12 weeks early it was one of the most modern facilities in Europe at the time.
The airport has recently been granted planning permission to extend its runway, which will allow it to cater for more long-haul flights. It is also building a £40m International Pier, a three-storey building for arriving and departing passengers.
Birmingham Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said: ‘It's poignant that at a time when we are focusing on the future, we should also be looking back to the opening of the airport’s current site. It certainly doesn’t seem 25 years since the airport unveiled its new terminal. This year will also mark the airport’s 70th anniversary and the opening of our new International Pier.’
