Trolley staff face redundancy

Trolley staff at Birmingham Airport face redundancy – because of a new £1 charge for their services, the Post reports. Staff who help travellers with their baggage face the axe after the fees were introduced at the airport last month, which led to a decline in usage by passengers.
Regional Unite union official John Partridge told the newspaper: ‘It is proposed that the number of trolley pushers will go down from 15 to 4. They are carrying out the selection criteria on May 15 and will be informing the staff on May 18 or 19.'
‘We understand that there is not going to be the same usage for the trolleys that there would have been previously, when they were free to use, but we are disappointed that it has led to these redundancies.'
‘We are talking to the company about how we can minimise the effect on the staff as much as possible. The longest serving worker has 10 years service, and there are others with between 7 and 10 years.’
