Passengers up 2.3% in December; 0.7% in 2007

Birmingham Airport handled 587,760 passengers in December, up 2.3% on the same month in 2006 and the highest number of passengers ever in the month of December. A total of 9,232,496 used the airport in 2007, up 0.9% on 2006. Scheduled passengers accounted for 73% of the 2007 figure, with charter passengers making up the remaining 27%.

Joe Kelly, Birmingham Airport Managing Director, said: 'We experienced an incredible year, with lots of highs, and we're really pleased to have ended it with record numbers of passengers in December and an increase overall during the twelve months.'

'We have welcomed new airlines and introduced new destinations, have opened our extended Terminal 1 departures lounge, significantly increasing facilities for the comfort and experience of our passengers.'

'Looking ahead, we have an exciting and challenging year ahead. We have already submitted a planning application to extend the runway, we will soon be finalising our plans for the replacement of the International Pier and work will also continue to improve vehicle access and airport parking.'

During December 2007, 489,046 scheduled passengers travelled through the airport and 98,714 charter travellers. Growth was experienced on scheduled non EU routes of 8.7% and on EU service by 3.8%. The Irish Republic saw an increase in passengers of 8.5%, and the Channel Isles saw a 39.6% rise. Long-haul scheduled routes to Asia saw an increase of 4.9%.

Scheduled routes that saw growth in December included, Bratislava (+1728.5%), Barcelona (+260.4%), Murcia (+187.3%), Faro (+173.1%), Geneva (+120.3%), Paphos (+99.6%), Arrecife (+57.5%), Chambery (+19.1%), Gothenburg (+18.5%), Glasgow (+18.3%) and Newcastle (+17.1%).

Charter destinations which experienced increased passenger numbers were, Malta (+196.2%), Bulgaria (+53%), Madeira (+52.8%), Egypt (+24.3%), Barbados (+7.6%) and Canaries (+3%).

The top ten scheduled destinations for 2007 (in order) were: Dublin, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Belfast, Dubai, Paris, Glasgow, Frankfurt, Malaga and Alicante. The top ten charter destinations for 2007 (in order) were: Palma, Tenerife, Arrecife, Paphos, Dalaman, Las Palmas, Heraklion, Fuerteventura, Larnaca and Ibiza.
