Reus is 26th Ryanair base; Birmingham flights announced

Ryanair has announced the Spanish airport of Reus, in Tarragona, 80 km south of Barcelona, as its 26th European base, and its 5th base in Spain. The airline will invest $140 million in basing two new aircraft at the hub to operate 12 routes, including one to Birmingham Airport.
Promoting the launch wearing a dress, a wig and wings, Ryanair CEO, Michael O'Leary, said: ‘We congratulate Reus for fighting off competition from 7 other airports across Europe to win this new base, which guarantees over a million passengers a year. Ryanair will now help develop the region's massive untapped potential by giving the tourism industry year round low fare access to Europe's largest cities.’
Fares on all Ryanair routes from Reus are available from €5 until midnight on Thursday (February 14). From the UK, the budget airline currently operates flights to Reus from Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, Luton and Stansted. It will add flights from Birmingham in June, and in October it will start flights to Reus from Palma, Paris, Santander, Santiago, and Seville.
Mr O'Leary said that Ryanair is in talks with 5 or 6 other Spanish airports about making one of them the airline's next hub in Spain, ‘probably for summer 2009’. However, after rapid expansion in Reus and other bases in Girona, Madrid, Valencia and Alicante, he said Spain was not Ryanair's priority in the search for new bases.
