Environmentalists slam runway plans
14.04.10
Environmental campaigners have said Birmingham Airport’s runway expansion plans will harm green belt land, the Coventry Telegraph reports. The airport is planning a £120 runway extension, but environmentalists are calling for more transparency over what work is to be carried out to permit the extension and who will pay for it.
Last month is was reported that Birmingham City Council and Solihull Borough Council might split the cost of diverting the A45 so work on the runway can go ahead. The highway, which is used by as much as 50,000 vehicles each day, would have to be shifted south between the Clock roundabout where traffic leaves the A45 to enter the airport, and Damson Parkway, the next junction west, costing £32m.
The airport has received planning permission for the runway extension but Friends of the Earth say the proposals go against the government’s Climate Change Act. In addition they say aiding the airport growth might be in conflict with Birmingham City Council’s new climate change action plan and have asked for all documents to be published for public scrutiny.
