Cycle protest over runway and road plans

Protestors took to the streets to protest against the planned re-routing the A45 Coventry to Birmingham road. They used pedal power to campaign against the proposed extension of Birmingham Airport’s runway, and reports that local councils will help to pay for it..
Birmingham City Council and Solihull Borough Council are reported to be set to give financial assistance to the airport’s planned £120m runway extension by splitting the cost of diverting the busy A45 so the work can go ahead. The protesters say £25m of public money has been earmarked for the scheme and say that the extension could bring 17,000 new flights a year.
A spokesman for People And Planet said: ‘The runway is due to be extended by 405 metres and this will have consequences in terms of emissions and a negative impact on the economy. They can’t extend the runway without diverting the road and they can’t afford that without council help, but that’s preposterous when councils have more important issues.'
‘Using taxpayers’ money to push through an unviable scheme that will set back plans to halt runaway climate change, makes no sense. It’s doubly crazy to be handing public money over to such a damaging industry at a time when schools and hospitals are facing cuts.’
