Airport boss confident on runway extension
16.04.10
The boss at Birmingham Airport has confirmed that a planned £120m runway extension at the hub will be built by 2015 at the latest. The new target date is 3 years later than initially planned for the development, and he has admitted that the money to pay for the project is not yet in place, but chief executive Paul Kehoe reassured the local community that the extension will be built.
His comments were made in response to claims this week by environmental group Friends of the Earth that a longer runway enabling planes to fly directly to China, India and the west coast of America - and therefore extra flights - conflicts with both the Government's and Birmingham Council's commitment to cut emissions. The group called for more public disclosure and also claim that two local councils will pay up to £32m to divert the A45 in order to help the extension project, which has planning permission, off the ground.
