Runway extension 'to be approved'
16.12.08
Plans to extend the runway at Birmingham Airport are to be approved by councillors. Solihull Council's planning committee unanimously backed a£125m project to extend the runway by 405m (1,329ft) towards Bickenhill and Hampton-in-Arden, but the final decision has been deferred until January so that councillors can review environmental measures to protect local residents.
The airport’s current runway limits the range of long-haul destinations available. If approved, the extended runway would allow larger aircraft to operate, as well as non-stop flights to the West Coast of America, South Africa, South America and Asia. Birmingham Airport CEO, Paul Kehoe, said he was disappointed it had not received approval at the meeting but added: ‘We will continue the dialogue with Solihull Council so that a positive decision can be made in the New Year.'
