Runway extension worth £1 billion
17.03.08
Birmingham Airport will generate almost £1 billion a year by 2030 if the runway is extended, according to research by the city council. The amount is more than 3 times last year’s £272 million estimate for the project, with the number of jobs resulting from the expansion now expected to bring total employment at the airport to about 19,000 by 2030, compared with 10,500 today.
Under the airports masterplan, which details its plans for the period until 2030, Birmingham International will extend the main runway by 400 metres to allow non-stop flights to China, India and the American west coast, build a new terminal and control tower and extend existing terminals, increase its airport parking and build new airport hotels.
Members of Birmingham City Council's cabinet welcomed the proposals and are backing the runway extension application for planning permission, which has been submitted to Solihull Council. If approved, the longer runway will cross a short section of the A45 which will be diverted into a tunnel.
