Ryanair announced 9 new routes from Birmingham Airport, all taking off in October, as it launched its 25th European base at the hub yesterday, basing aircraft and crew at the airport for the first time.
As well as previously announced routes from the UK airport, the airline said it will start another 9 routes from October. They are to Alicante, Derry, Fuerteventura, Katowice, Kaunas, Krakow, Palma, Malaga and Murciar.
Ryanair's marketing manager Bridget Dowling said that the opening of the airline's new base at Birmingham was a ‘double celebration’. She said: ‘We're celebrating the arrival of our first based aircraft here and we're also announcing 9 new routes which go on sale today.'
She said there was 'huge potential' for the airline to grow at Birmingham Airport. The airline hopes to be flying 5 million passengers a year in and out of the airport in 5 years' time, up from around 300,000 passengers this year.
The airport’s business development director, Peter Vella, said: ‘We're delighted to be officially unveiling Birmingham Airport as Ryanair’s 25th base, as well as welcoming the announcement of these further 9 scheduled routes.'
‘These new services offer passengers travelling from their local airport even greater choice and flexibility, allowing them to travel from within their region - whether that be for leisure or business.'
