What an extra 405m means to the airport
20.01.08
A strip of tarmac 405 metres long could open up the world for travellers from the Midlands. This is the length of the runway extension Birmingham Airport recently applied for planning permission to build, and it would allow airlines to operate flights to China, Thailand, Malaysia, the West Coast of America, the Caribbean and South America from the hub.
At the moment the airport's runway, which is just under 2600 metres long, is too short to allow fully laden jets - carrying passengers, fuel and cargo - to take off to these far flung destinations. However, they can land without difficulty because they are carrying less fuel.
If Solihull Council give the green light to the extension, which would take the runway over the current A45 Birmingham to Coventry dual carriageway road, seeing the road diverted underground via a tunnel, work on the £120 million scheme could start next year. Within 3 years the airport would be able to handle even more flights to destinations all over the globe.
