Flight chaos costs the airport £1m so far
20.04.10
The Icelandic volcano eruptions have cost Birmingham Airport more than £1m since flights were grounded last Thursday, the Post reports. It is losing between £250,000 and £300,000 a day, and the total has already passed the £1m mark, a spokesman confirmed.
The terminal halls are empty and construction teams working on the airport expansion programme are taking full advantage by drilling and hammering without fear of being told to turn it down, with lines of workers have been repainting the white lines on the runway and carrying out other essential maintenance work, the newspaper reports.
However, staff have eased fears that stranded passengers who have left their cars in airport car parks face big bills on their return. An airport spokesman told the newspaper that passengers should show their return flight details to NCP staff on their return and will only be charged for the length of stay they originally booked for.
