Airport board backs runway extension
21.04.11
Birmingham Airport is to invite tenders for its £65 million runway extension project later this year, after the plans were formally approved at a board meeting yesterday. The project is expected to start in 2012 and be complete in 2014.
Last week the Government pledged £15.7 million from its regional growth fund towards the £32 million cost of diverting the A45 trunk road away from the airport perimeter to make room for the 400 metre runway extension. Extending the runway will allow bigger planes to take off from the airport with full fuel loads, which would allow flights to operate non stop to the west coast of America and the Far East.
