Bikers in court over airport battle
22.04.09
Knuckle dusters, hammers and a meat cleaver were among weapons retrieved after a pitch battle between rival biker gangs at Birmingham Airport, a court heard yesterday. Up to 30 bikers fought inside a terminal building last January, Birmingham Crown Court was told. 12 men deny charges of riot and an alternative charge of violent disorder.
The prosecution said passengers were frightened and distressed by the battle between members of the Hells Angels and Outlaws gangs. Timothy Raggatt QC told the court the two groups have a long-standing rivalry.
He said: ‘In the course of the disturbance a variety of quite alarming weapons were used. There were knives produced, there was certainly a machete and there were various blunt instruments.'
He said a number of people involved were injured, although no members of the public were hurt. 7 of the men on trial are Outlaw members, the other 5 are Hells Angels.
