Man fined £1500 for driving Portuguese car back to Birmingham
20.04.10
A passenger stranded in Portugal is facing a £1500 fine after driving a hire car hired in the country back to his home in Coventry after this flight to Birmingham Airport was cancelled due to the ash cloud. A spokesman for his car hire company said the fee was ‘standard’ for unauthorised one way journeys, covering expenses for returning the car to its country of origin.
Paul Stidworthy, from Coundon, was on a holiday in the Algarve when his flight home was cancelled. When he took the car he had hired in Portugal - a left hand drive Portuguese registered vehicle - to Budget Car Hire at Birmingham Airport he was told he would have to pay a fine £1500 under the terms of his rental agreement.
He said he had looked for alternative ways to get his family home after flights to the UK were suspended. He told the BBC: ‘I have been advised to try and negotiate with the hire car company at Birmingham Airport. Things are still up in the air at the moment.'
