Drug smuggler jailed

A man who was caught at Birmingham Airport trying to smuggle 28 packages of heroin into the country after swallowing each has been jailed for 9 years.
Mohammed Asif Choudary, 35, of Newtown Street, Leicester, was stopped at the airport by UK Border Agency officers after he arrived on a flight from Islamabad, Pakistan, on June 11 this year. He had swallowed 138 grams of heroin in 28 packages, with an estimated value of around £25,000.
He was charged with drug smuggling offences under the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979, and with possession of a firearm and ammunition, in connection with a sawn-off shotgun and 49 rounds of ammunition found during a search of his home.
