Pilot arrested over drink fears
24.09.09
An airline pilot was arrested at Birmingham Airport over the weekend after police were informed that he smelled of alcohol, the Birmingham Mail reports. He was about to take control of the Boeing passenger plane flying to Philadelphia when police were called 10 minutes before the scheduled take-off at 08:45 on Saturday.
The pilot was arrested and taken to Stechford Police where he was asked to provide a breath test. Tough legal limits for pilots of 9 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath is almost four times stricter than the drink-drive limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. A police spokeswoman said: ‘The results of that test proved to be negative and the pilot was released without charge.’
However, as a result of the incident the passengers suffered a 24-hour delay.
