Freight plane emergency
25.09.10
An emergency was declared at Birmingham Airport in the early hours yesterday after a pilot was forced to shut down one of his plane's engines before landing, the Coventry Telegraph reports. Some 25 firefighters were on standby at the runway after receiving the emergency call from a freight plane at around 01:15, but the Air Contractors-run EI-SLK landed safely.
Group chief executive of Air Contractors, Hugh Flynn, said the engine was turned off as a precautionary measure. He added: ‘The crew acted professionally and in accordance with standard procedures. There was no threat either to people living in the Birmingham area or the aircraft and two crew members.’
