Passengers down 0.7%

Birmingham Airport passengers were down by 0.7% in October compared to the same month last year. However, with other UK airports including Manchester and Gatwick reporting passengers down by around 10%, the midlands hub is happy with its performance.
Nationally the number of passengers travelling through Britain’s airports was 6% down last month. Peter Vella, Birmingham Airport’s business development director, said they were doing far better than any other airport in the country (although Bristol Airport reported passengers up 0.4% this week).
While October’s figures were 'fractionally down', he said that he believes this was just a ‘blip’ and is expecting a positive figure in November. He added: ‘For the year to date our passenger figures are already up 4.3% up while all other airports are down.'
Paul Kehoe, the airport’s new chief executive, said: ‘The recession has clearly had an affect on the airport, but with the latest statistics indicate an average fall in passenger numbers across all UK airports of around 6% last month. Against this backdrop, Birmingham continues to perform well.’
