Runway plan could move the goal posts for rugby club
26.01.08
Planes could be flying in so low into Birmingham Airport that Exiles Rugby Club will be forced to move their goal posts. Although current plans do not affect the ground, which is near the airport, Frank Jewitt, club vice chair told the Evening News that there is currently an 'issue' about the posts being in the way of aircraft landing on the runway.
Mr Jewitt told the newspaper: 'At the moment we are not absolutely certain what we will need to do. On the first plan the airport boundary was going to be way beyond us and we were going to be part of new airport parking. But since then they have been downgraded [after the airport scrapped plans for a new runway], we don't fall within the boundary of the proposed work, but we do have an issue about the rugby posts possibly being an obstruction on the approach.'
The club has been at the site since the early 1960s. Some of its members will be meeting with airport staff next week to clarify the matter.
