bmibaby axe five routes
26.11.08
Budget airline bmibaby is axing five of its 21 routes from Birmingham Airport next summer. From the end of March the airline has scrapped its services to Rome, Milan, Lisbon, Madrid and Bordeaux. The airline, part of the bmi group, said the move was in response to a lack of demand, with travellers cutting down on city breaks.
Founder and Chairman Sir Michael Bishop recently agreed to sell his controlling stake in the group to Lufthansa. bmibaby is widely regarded to be set for a sale or closure once the deal is complete, with the German airline focusing on full service flights. The decision to axe the five routes is expected to lead to 65 job losses in Birmingham, as well as 5 in the East Midlands.
