Airport bangs the ‘let us expand’ drum again
28.05.10
The PR machine at Birmingham Airport has been banging its 'we're an alternative to London airport expansion' drum again. In a press release on its website it says that the Government's new transport plans 'have highlighted that there are many options for travellers other than Heathrow', going on to suggest that it is as close to many Londoners as Heathrow !
The new coalition Government has said that it will block the development of a third runway at Heathrow and will not allow any additional runways at Gatwick and Stansted (not that Gatwick wants one), at least during the present parliament. BAA has officially withdrawn its planning applications for new runways at Heathrow and Stansted.
A spokesman for Birmingham Airport reacted to the news with a claim that journey times are only 70 minutes from London Euston and that ‘the majority of Londoners could probably get to Birmingham as quickly as they could reach Heathrow Airport's check-in desks’. [This is clearly wrong. Even if you live next to Euston Station - and the majority would need to travel to it, including a trip across London - it would still be much quicker to get to Heathrow than Birmingham.]
Now if they had made the claims about Gatwick and passengers from North London, or Stansted and west London, they might have worked. Time for another press release or two..?!.
