Nine years for drug smuggling pensioner

A 66-year-old woman who hoped that her appearance as a ‘white-haired grandmother’ would help her smuggle cocaine in to the UK via Birmingham Airport has been jailed for 9 years, the Express & Star reports.
Simone Ferre, from France, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday. The court heard she had more than 3 pounds of the drug in her hand luggage - with an estimated street value of over £150,000.
UK Border Agency officers at the airport stopped Ms Ferre when she arrived on a flight via Brussels from Nairobi in April this year. Officers searched her luggage and found the cocaine concealed in its base.
Sentencing her Judge Robert Juckes, said: ‘With the appearance of a white-haired grandmother carrying an eccentric coloured bag, you thought that you would have more chance of getting away with this.’
