New masterplan released

Birmingham Airport has released a new 'masterplan' - a blue print for its future direction over the next 23 years. The plan, released along with another plan on how passengers might get to the airport, includes an extension of the runway and greater emphasis on promoting public transport. The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick, and a number of the region's transport leaders attended a presentation at the airport.
A spokesman for the airport said that the new masterplan, entitled 'Towards 2030: Planning A Sustainable Future for Air Transport in the Midlands', outlines how Birmingham International 'can grow sustainably whilst meeting the regional demand for air travel over the next 23 years'. The Surface Access Strategy (entitled 'Moving Together') 'recognises the importance of surface access to the airport, set within the context of a sustainable approach, and gives new targets, over a shorter period, up to the year 2012,' he added.
The documents include proposals to extend the runway by 405 metres, which would enable Birmingham International to operate more long haul routes. A planning application for this is expected to be submitted by the end of the year. The plan also includes a target of 25% of all people travelling to the airport by public transport by 2012, up from 18% last year.
The release of these two documents follows a lengthy review process, which included consultations and research on the effects of the planned development, the spokesman said.
