New Birmingham airport masterplan includes third terminal
31.10.05
Birmingham International Airport has announced expansion plans, which include a third passenger terminal. The expanded airport could then cope with 33m passengers by 2030, would create an additional 27,430 jobs and generate £957m for the local region.
The masterplan includes a runway extension and a second runway as well as a third passenger terminal. Richard Heard, Birmingham Airport Managing Director, said: 'We believe Birmingham International should continue to grow and develop, as it has over the last 20 years, to continue to support the growth and development of the region.'
But Friends of the Earth say the expansion would lead to more pollution and the loss of green belt land. Spokesman Chris Crean said: 'The masterplan declares an open season on our environment. It is now up to the planning bodies from across the region to question the assumptions and claimed benefits that underpin it and not take them at face value.'
The scheme needs approval from Solihull Council. Public meetings, exhibitions and a summary newsletter have been arranged for the airport's neighbours. The plan opens for consultation from today until March 2006.
