Birmingham airport security
Birmingham Airport's security arangements are subject to change when specific threats (for more information see www.bhx.co.uk). Under normal circumstances security arrangements are as follows:
Check in times
Security has been enhanced at the airport. This means that checking in can take longer than it used to. It is essential that you reach the airport well ahead of your flight time.
International flights - check in 2 hours prior to departure
European flights - check in 2 hours prior to departure
Domestic flights - check in 1 hour prior to departure
Boarding usually begins around 45 minutes before departure.
Hand Baggage
Your hand luggage should not contain: scissors, razor blades, knives with blades of any length, household cutlery, tweezers, hypodermic needles (unless required for medical reasons), tools of any kind, toy / replica guns (metal or plastic), catapults, knitting needles, sporting bats, billiard, snooker or pool cues and darts.

In addition to the restrictions on what is allowed in hand luggage, there are a number of items that must not be taken on board an aircraft, either as hand luggage or in the hold:
- flammable liquids, solids and oxidisers
- organic peroxides
- gas cylinders
- infectious substances,
- wet car cell batteries
- instruments containing magnets or mercury
- magnetrons
- fireworks
- non-safety matches, fire lighters, lighter fuel
- paints or paint thinners
- poisons, arsenic, cyanide, weed killer, acids, corrosives, alkalis, caustic soda, creosote, quicklime, oiled paper
- radioactive materials
